Trump Calls for Jailing of Chicago Mayor and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Deploy in City

Former President Donald J. Trump on midweek called for the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor as well!"

The two leaders are members of the Democratic faction.

These remarks coincide with the arrival of National Guard personnel in the Chicago region under orders from the current government, despite strong objections from Illinois authorities such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump has sought to have an African American leader wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on Wednesday. "I'm not going anywhere."

The governor responded via social platforms, stating: "I refuse to yield. Now Trump is calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What's next on the path to full-blown autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard units from Texas had reached the Elwood army reserve center, an army base approximately 50 miles from Chicago, as the administration pushes forward with its aggressive urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "dangerous disaster zone", despite official statistics indicate significant drops in many offenses, such as murders.

On Wednesday, two hundred state guard troops were scheduled to arrive to the region, with an additional three hundred Illinois guard personnel preparing to mobilize, according to reports. Authorities reportedly stated the soldiers would not perform police functions but would protect ICE officers and government buildings.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with state guard insignia were spotted at the military facility in Elwood. Vehicles labeled "Disaster Relief" dropped off portable toilets and essential items. Trailers were arranged in lines. Additional fencing was installed around the compound.

Aviation authorities ordered flight restrictions over the army reserve center for safety concerns until 6 December.

The administration has intensified immigration enforcement in Chicago in recent weeks, triggering protests, particularly near an immigration center in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city initiated legal action targeting the federal government, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a court to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on the city and state, labeling it "unlawful and dangerous".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is scheduled for the next day.

The mayor also signed an executive order on Monday prohibiting ICE officers and related personnel from using city-owned property as operation bases for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has charged Trump of using military forces as "political props" and "pawns".

At a news conference on Tuesday, Pritzker said that the president is attempting to "justify and normalize the deployment of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old Posse Comitatus Act restricts the military's role in civilian law enforcement. Yet, the president has said he would be prepared to activate the Insurrection Act, which permits a president to dispatch active duty military in regions that are failing to suppress an uprising or are defying federal law.

Since starting his second term, the president has dispatched or discussed deploying troops to at least 10 cities, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, arguing that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and defend ICE officers.

Data indicates that serious offenses across the US has declined in recent years. In the city, for instance, homicides were reduced 31% to 278 through August, according to police data.

A recent poll released on Wednesday found that most Americans oppose the deployment of military forces without an external threat.
