The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
