Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
