Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
