Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
