Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
